Sunday, 18th October is International Anti-Slavery Day – a day when people around the world raise awareness of human trafficking and modern slavery.
For many of us, it will be hard to believe that such a thing still exists in our society, but it does, and it’s something we can all help to eradicate. It’s estimated there are more than 40 million global victims of modern slavery – that’s five victims for every 1,000 people. In the UK alone, at least 13,000 people are held in slavery against their will. Modern slavery in the UK takes many forms, including forced sexual exploitation, domestic slavery and forced labour.
At Greencore, we take our commitment to ending modern slavery very seriously. We are asking our people if they have any concerns or worries about this topic, not to keep quiet – raise them with a fellow colleague, a supervisor or a manager and together we can help make a difference. For any colleague that doesn’t feel comfortable talking directly to a colleague, they can contact Greencore’s whistleblowing telephone hotline on 0800 015 9726.
Stronger Together is a multi-stakeholder initiative aimed at reducing modern slavery, particularly hidden forced labour, trafficking and other third-party exploitation of workers. We partner with their Stronger Together campaign – you can read more about this on their website here.
Remember if you see something or know something isn’t right, please speak up and ensure no-one has to suffer in silence through slavery.
